Heterogenitätsfehler

Heterogenitätsfehler, also known as heterogeneity of variance, is a statistical concept that refers to a situation where the variability of a dependent variable is not constant across all levels of an independent variable. In simpler terms, it means that the spread or dispersion of data points around the mean is different for different groups or conditions being studied. This is a common assumption violation in many statistical analyses, such as regression and ANOVA.

The presence of heterogenitätsfehler can impact the validity and reliability of statistical test results. For instance, in regression analysis, if the variance of the residuals (the difference between observed and predicted values) increases with the independent variable, the standard errors of the regression coefficients may be underestimated. One common strategy is to use robust standard errors, which are adjusted to be less sensitive to violations of the homoscedasticity assumption. Transformations of the dependent variable, such as taking the logarithm, can sometimes stabilize the variance. In other cases, a generalized least squares (GLS) approach or weighted least squares (WLS) might be more appropriate, where observations with higher variance are given less weight in the analysis. The choice of method depends on the specific nature of the data and the research question.
