Hermosyyitä, also known as nerve fibers, are elongated appendages of nerve cells called neurons. They are specialized for transmitting electrical and chemical signals throughout the nervous system. There are two primary types of nerve fibers: axons and dendrites. Axons are typically long, slender projections that carry nerve impulses away from the neuron's cell body, while dendrites are shorter, branched extensions that receive signals from other neurons and transmit them towards the cell body.

Nerve fibers can be myelinated or unmyelinated. Myelinated nerve fibers are covered by a fatty insulating sheath called myelin, which is produced by glial cells. This myelin sheath allows for faster conduction of nerve impulses through a process called saltatory conduction. Unmyelinated nerve fibers lack this insulation and transmit signals more slowly.

The diameter and length of nerve fibers vary considerably depending on their function and location within the nervous system. Larger diameter fibers generally conduct impulses faster than smaller diameter fibers. These fibers form the communication pathways of the nervous system, enabling everything from simple reflexes to complex cognitive functions. Damage to nerve fibers can lead to a variety of neurological disorders, affecting sensation, movement, and organ function. Research into nerve fiber regeneration and repair is an active area of neuroscience, aiming to restore function after injury.
