Hengityssäädelyllä refers to the physiological mechanisms that control breathing in organisms. This complex process ensures an adequate supply of oxygen to the body's tissues while efficiently removing carbon dioxide. The primary control center for breathing is located in the brainstem, specifically within the medulla oblongata and pons.

These respiratory centers receive information from various sources, including chemoreceptors that monitor blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, as well as stretch receptors in the lungs that regulate the depth and rate of breathing. The nervous system then sends signals to the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which are responsible for expanding and contracting the chest cavity, thereby facilitating inhalation and exhalation.

Voluntary control of breathing, such as holding one's breath or sighing, is also possible and involves signals originating from the cerebral cortex. However, the autonomic nervous system primarily governs respiration to maintain homeostasis, adapting breathing patterns to meet the body's metabolic demands during rest, exercise, or stress. Disruptions in this intricate regulatory system can lead to various respiratory disorders.
