Helvellyn

Helvellyn is a mountain in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. It has a summit elevation of 950 metres (3,117 feet) above sea level, making it the third-highest peak in England and the highest point in the Eastern Fells. The mountain lies within the Lake District National Park.

Geography and geology: Helvellyn forms the core of the Helvellyn range in the Eastern Fells, with Glenridding to the southwest and Patterdale to the north. The landscape features rugged ridges, rocky gullies, and grassy slopes. The mountain is underlain by rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group, including andesite and rhyolite. A prominent feature on the east side is Striding Edge, a famous narrow ridge that descends toward Red Tarn; Swirral Edge is a shorter ridge on the southwest flank.

Access and routes: The summit is reached by several routes, the most popular being the ascent from Glenridding via Striding Edge. Alternative approaches include a longer circuit from Patterdale via Swirral Edge or routes around the eastern slopes to Red Tarn. The area attracts hikers, climbers, and visitors year-round. The ascent can be steep and exposed in places, particularly along Striding Edge, and winter conditions may require proper equipment and navigation.
