Hedelmöitysvaihe refers to the process of fertilization in biology. It is the fusion of two gametes, typically a male sperm and a female ovum, to form a zygote. This event marks the beginning of sexual reproduction and the development of a new individual.

The process of fertilization involves several stages. First, sperm must be deposited near the ovum. This is usually achieved through sexual intercourse in many animals. Upon release, sperm undergo capacitation, a series of physiological changes that enable them to fertilize the egg. The sperm then travel through the female reproductive tract, overcoming various barriers to reach the ovum, which is typically located in the oviduct.

Once a sperm reaches the ovum, it must penetrate the outer layers of the egg, including the corona radiata and the zona pellucida. This penetration is facilitated by enzymes released from the sperm's acrosome. Following penetration, the sperm fuses with the egg's plasma membrane, and the sperm nucleus enters the ovum. The fusion of the male and female pronuclei results in the formation of a diploid zygote, which contains the complete set of chromosomes necessary for development.

In some organisms, like certain plants and fungi, fertilization may involve different types of gametes or a more complex fusion process. Regardless of the specific mechanism, the core principle remains the union of genetic material from two parents to initiate the development of a new organism.
