Heatinsulated

Heat-insulated (also written as heatinsulated) describes materials or assemblies designed to minimize heat transfer between environments at different temperatures. The goal is to reduce energy loss or gain and improve thermal comfort.

This is achieved through low thermal conductivity, air tightness, and, in some cases, low emissivity if radiant heat is involved. Common insulating materials include rigid foams (polystyrene, polyurethane), mineral wool, fiberglass, aerogels, and vacuum insulation panels. Reflective or radiant barriers reduce heat transfer by lowering radiative heat exchange, often used in roofs and attic spaces.

Performance is quantified by metrics such as thermal conductivity (k), R-value (US) or RSI, and U-value for assemblies. The thickness, installation quality, and presence of thermal bridges influence overall performance. Codes and standards like ASTM C518, ISO 6946, EN 12667 guide testing, while building codes specify required insulation levels for buildings.

Applications include building envelopes (walls, roofs, floors, windows), pipes and HVAC ductwork, appliances, and refrigerated transport. Heat-insulated systems can reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling and increase occupant comfort.

Limitations include cost, environmental impact of production, potential moisture issues, and degradation of some materials over time. Proper installation and moisture control are crucial to avoid reduced performance.
