Heatcarrying

Heatcarrying refers to the process or capacity by which thermal energy is transported from regions of higher temperature to regions of lower temperature within a material or between systems. It is governed by the mechanisms collectively described as heat transfer and is characterized by a material’s ability to conduct, convect, or radiate heat.

On a microscopic level, heatcarrying is accomplished by particles and quanta that transmit energy. In solids, lattice vibrations (phonons) are the primary carriers in nonmetals, while free electrons contribute significantly in metals. In transparent media, photons carry radiant heat. In fluids, macroscopic motion (convection) transports heat through the bulk movement of molecules.

Conduction occurs through interactions between neighboring particles; convection involves bulk fluid motion; radiation is the transfer of energy via electromagnetic waves. The rate of heatcarrying in a material is quantified by its thermal conductivity, k, with higher k indicating more efficient conduction. Other related properties include density, specific heat capacity, and thermal diffusivity, defined as alpha = k/(rho c).

Engineering design targets either enhancing or suppressing heatcarrying. High-thermal-conductivity materials are used for heat sinks and thermal paths, while low-conductivity materials serve as insulators. At small scales, phonon scattering and interface resistance can dominate, leading to size- and orientation-dependent heatcarrying. Tools such as finite-element analysis and calorimetry are used to study it.
