HeNo

HeNo (Hungarian: Nahó) is an island in Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, located in Hungary. The island is situated near the northern shore of Lake Balaton, near the settlement of Tihany.

Physical Characteristics

HeNo has a total area of 31.73 ha. The island is relatively small and is part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. It is connected to the mainland by a road and a pedestrian bridge. The island features a mixed vegetation of grasslands, female fern, and trees, which include oak, ash, and lime.

History and Present Day

The island has a long history dating back to the Stone Age. Archaeological findings have revealed that the island was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period. In the Middle Ages, HeNo was a significant site for the Benedictine order. The island's monastery, dedicated to Our Lady, was built in the 11th century. The complex was destroyed in the 16th century but remains were still observable in the 19th century. Today, a small shrine dedicated to Our Lady stands on the island.
