Haukadalur

Haukadalur is a geothermal valley in Iceland, located in the southwest part of the island on the Golden Circle route. It lies along the Hvítá river, near the towns of Laugarvatn and Gullfoss, and is part of the Bláskógabyggð municipality in the Southern Region. The name Haukadalur means "hawk valley" in Icelandic.

The area is known for its cluster of hot springs, fumaroles, and geysers. Its best-known features are the geyser Geysir, which gave its name to geysers worldwide, and Strokkur, a nearby geyser that erupts regularly, sending a column of steam and water into the air. In contrast, Geysir’s eruptions have become infrequent in modern times, though the field remains highly active geothermally. Visitors can observe boiling mud pools and other hydrothermal activity in the area.

Geologically, Haukadalur sits atop a volcanic system where heat from a shallow magma chamber heats groundwater, creating intermittent eruptions and steaming vents. The site has been a tourist destination since the 19th century and is frequently visited as part of the Golden Circle circuit along with Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park.

Protection and access: The geothermal area is managed as a protected geotouristic site with marked paths and boardwalks to protect delicate ground and ensure visitor safety. It is a major stop for international visitors and Icelanders alike, offering insights into Iceland’s geothermal activity and its cultural significance.
