Happamuuden

Happamuuden, the Finnish term for acidity, is the property of a substance that describes how acidic it is. In chemistry, acidity is linked to the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution; greater H+ concentration corresponds to higher acidity and a lower pH.

The pH scale, from 0 to 14, is the standard measure used to express acidity. Values below 7 indicate acidity, with lower numbers representing stronger acidity; values above 7 indicate basicity. In many fields, acidity is also reported as titratable acidity, which measures the total amount of acid that can be neutralized by a base.

Acids and bases can be described by different theories. The Arrhenius view defines acids as substances that donate hydrogen ions and bases as those that produce hydroxide ions in water. The Brønsted-Lowry definition broadens this, describing acids as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors.

Common examples include citric acid in citrus fruits, acetic acid in vinegar, and hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Acidity affects flavor, texture, preservation, and chemical reactivity. In biology, maintaining appropriate pH is essential for enzyme activity and metabolic processes, while in the environment, acidification from pollution can alter soils and aquatic systems.
