Hanzimerkistön

Hanzimerkistön is a type of writing system used in the Finnish language, named after its creator, the Finnish linguist Elias Lönnrot. It was developed in the 19th century as an alternative to the traditional Finnish orthography, which was based on the Swedish language. The Hanzimerkistön system aims to create a more phonetic and consistent spelling system for Finnish, reflecting the sounds of the language more accurately.

The system uses a set of 29 letters, including the basic Latin alphabet with the addition of Ä, Ö, and Ü. It also includes diacritics to represent specific sounds, such as the circumflex (^) for long vowels and the umlaut (¨) for certain vowel sounds. The Hanzimerkistön system was designed to be more intuitive and easier to learn for Finnish speakers, as it aligns more closely with the pronunciation of the language.

Despite its intended benefits, the Hanzimerkistön system has not gained widespread adoption in Finland. The traditional Finnish orthography, which was influenced by Swedish, remains the standard.
