Hakkurivirtalähteet, also known as switching-mode power supplies (SMPS), are electronic power supplies that incorporate a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently. Unlike linear power supplies that dissipate excess energy as heat, switching power supplies rapidly switch a component, typically a transistor, on and off at high frequencies. This switching action allows for efficient voltage conversion.

The core principle involves converting the input AC voltage to DC, then chopping this DC into pulses. These pulses are then transformed to the desired output voltage, usually by a transformer, and finally rectified and filtered to produce a stable DC output. The high switching frequency enables the use of smaller and lighter transformers and filtering components compared to lower-frequency designs.

Hakkurivirtalähteet are widely used due to their high efficiency, small size, and light weight. They are prevalent in a vast array of electronic devices, including computer power supplies, mobile phone chargers, televisions, and industrial equipment. Their efficiency translates to reduced energy consumption and less heat generation, which are significant advantages in modern electronics. However, they can also generate electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to their high-frequency switching, necessitating careful design and filtering to mitigate these effects.
