Hajussüsteemi, also known as a distributed system, refers to a collection of independent computers that communicate and coordinate their actions by passing messages to one another. These computers, or nodes, appear to users as a single coherent system. The key characteristic of a distributed system is that its components are geographically dispersed and can operate autonomously. This distribution allows for greater reliability, scalability, and performance compared to centralized systems.

One of the primary benefits of distributed systems is fault tolerance. If one node fails, the system can continue to operate by utilizing other available nodes. This redundancy makes them highly resilient to hardware failures. Scalability is another significant advantage, as new nodes can be added to the system to handle increasing workloads, thus improving performance and capacity without requiring a complete overhaul of the existing infrastructure.

However, designing and managing distributed systems presents unique challenges. Ensuring consistency of data across multiple nodes can be complex, leading to issues like concurrent access and the need for sophisticated synchronization mechanisms. Network latency and the potential for network partitions, where parts of the system become temporarily disconnected, also need to be carefully addressed. Examples of distributed systems include the internet itself, cloud computing platforms, peer-to-peer networks, and large-scale databases. The underlying principles of distributed systems are fundamental to modern computing and web infrastructure.
