Hadsel

Hadsel is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway, and forms part of the Vesterålen region on the islands off the coast of northern Norway. The municipality comprises the islands of Hadseløya and Langøya and several smaller islets. The administrative centre is the town of Stokmarknes, while the village of Melbu on Langøya is another major population center.

Geography and transportation: The landscape is dominated by sea, fjords, and coastal settlements. The Hadsel Bridge connects Hadseløya with Langøya, and the region is served by road, ferry routes, and coastal services that link Hadsel with surrounding Vesterålen communities. The port in Stokmarknes is a hub for regional traffic and serves the Hurtigruten coastal voyage.

Economy and demographics: The local economy traditionally relies on fishing and fisheries-related industries, with aquaculture, maritime services, and agriculture contributing as well. In recent decades, tourism and service industries have grown, driven by the region’s coastal scenery and cultural heritage. The municipality’s population is distributed mainly between Stokmarknes and Melbu, with smaller settlements across the islands.

History and governance: Hadsel was established as a municipality in 1838 under the formannskapsdistrikt law. Like many northern municipalities, its boundaries and administrative structure have been adjusted during nationwide reforms, notably in the mid-20th century. Local governance is carried out by a municipal council (kommunestyre), which elects a mayor and is responsible for services such as education, infrastructure, and social programs.

Hadsel is part of Nordland’s coastal municipalities and shares cultural and natural heritage with the broader Vesterålen area.
