The Habsburgs, also known as the House of Habsburg, were one of Europe’s most influential royal dynasties. Originating from Habsburg Castle in what is now Switzerland, the family rose to prominence in the Late Middle Ages and became a dominant political force within the Holy Roman Empire for centuries. Rudolf I of Habsburg, elected King of the Romans in 1273, secured the Austrian hereditary lands and laid the foundations of Habsburg power.
