Haamonga

Haamonga is a large stone trilithon located on the island of Tongatapu in Tonga. It is also known as the Haamonga-a-Maui, which translates to "Maui's Burden" or "Maui's Leaning Stone." The structure consists of three upright limestone slabs, each weighing approximately 40 tons, topped by a horizontal lintel stone. It is believed to have been erected around the year 1200 AD.

The purpose of Haamonga is not definitively known, but it is widely thought to have served as a monumental gateway or a sundial. Oral traditions suggest it was built by the Tongan king Tu'itatui to commemorate the bond between his two sons. Another legend attributes its construction to the demigod Maui, who is said to have carried the stones from the island of Upolu in Samoa.
