The term indicates that the item has undergone standardized testing and labeling procedures administered by HVI or an authorized testing lab and has met the applicable criteria for performance, efficiency, and safety.

Standards and tests associated with HVI accreditation cover equipment such as room air conditioners, central air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, and certain ventilation components. Tests typically assess cooling or heating capacity, energy efficiency metrics (such as SEER, HSPF, or EER), airflow, sound levels, refrigerant charge, and safety features. Independent third‑party labs conduct the tests to ensure consistency, and certified products receive an HVI certification mark in product literature and labeling.
