HIST1H1A

HIST1H1A, also known as Histone H1.1, is a protein encoded by the HIST1H1A gene in humans. This gene is part of the histone gene cluster on chromosome 6. Histones are a family of proteins that play a crucial role in packaging DNA into structural units called nucleosomes. Nucleosomes are the fundamental building blocks of chromatin, which makes up chromosomes within the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.

Histone H1 proteins are a subtype of linker histones. Unlike the core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) that form the octameric spool around which DNA is wrapped, linker histones bind to the DNA that enters and exits the nucleosome. This binding helps to further condense the chromatin structure, contributing to the higher-order organization of the genome.
