HIDlampen

HID, which stands for High-Intensity Discharge, refers to a type of gas-discharge lamp that produces light by creating an electric arc through a pressurized gas. These lamps are often referred to as HID lamps or Xenon lamps, though Xenon is a specific gas used in some HID variants. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which rely on heating a filament, HID lamps generate light through the ionization of gases.

The basic components of an HID lamp include an arc tube containing a gas (often a mixture of metal salts, mercury, and noble gases) and electrodes. An ignitor is required to initiate the arc by providing a high-voltage pulse. Once the arc is established, a ballast is used to regulate the current and voltage supplied to the lamp, maintaining a stable light output.

HID lamps are known for their high luminous efficacy, meaning they produce a lot of light for the amount of energy consumed, and their long lifespan. They emit a bright, often bluish-white light. Common applications include automotive headlights, stadium lighting, streetlights, and horticultural lighting. Different types of HID lamps exist, such as metal halide, high-pressure sodium, and mercury vapor lamps, each offering distinct light characteristics and efficiencies.
