HF transceiver is a radio device that combines a high-frequency transmitter and receiver capable of operating on the shortwave bands from roughly 3 to 30 MHz. It is used for long-distance communication in amateur radio, maritime, aviation, and government services, where ionospheric propagation can allow signals to travel around the globe.

Typical HF transceivers consist of a front-end RF section, a frequency synthesis system (such as a VFO or DDS), mixer and intermediate frequency stages for the receiver, an audio chain, and a power amplifier for the transmitter. They also include an antenna matching network or built-in tuner, and many modern units integrate digital signal processing, filtering, preamplifiers, and noise reduction to improve sensitivity and selectivity.

Modes and operation commonly supported on HF transceivers include single-sideband voice (SSB), both USB and LSB, CW (Morse code), and AM, with many models offering various digital modes via data interfaces. Built-in features may include programmable filters, notch filtering, remote control interfaces, logging capabilities, and sometimes a panadapter display for real-time spectrum viewing.

Power output varies widely: hobbyist and small stations may use a few watts to tens of watts, while more capable or commercial rigs can deliver hundreds or even kilowatts with appropriate licensing and cooling. Antenna systems and tuning are critical for efficient operation, as mismatches can reduce performance and damage equipment. Operators must observe regulatory requirements, including band allocations, power limits, and license conditions, along with RF exposure safety guidelines.
