Höyrykompressi, also known as steam compression, is a thermodynamic process used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It involves the compression of a gaseous refrigerant, which increases its temperature and pressure. This hot, high-pressure gas then passes through a condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and liquefies. The liquid refrigerant then flows through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop significantly. Finally, the cold, low-pressure liquid enters an evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the space to be cooled, turning back into a gas. This cycle repeats continuously, enabling the transfer of heat and the cooling of a specific area. The efficiency of a steam compression system is largely determined by the properties of the refrigerant used and the design of the compressor and heat exchangers. Common refrigerants include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), though older systems may use chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) which are being phased out due to their environmental impact. The primary components of a steam compression system are the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator.
