Höyrykammiokuivaus, known in English as steam chamber drying, is a wood drying method that utilizes steam to heat the wood. In this process, steam is introduced into a sealed chamber containing the lumber. The heat from the steam is transferred to the wood, causing the moisture within to evaporate. This method is distinct from conventional kiln drying where hot air circulates. The steam environment helps to reduce internal stresses in the wood and can lead to a more uniform drying process. The steam pressure and temperature can be carefully controlled to manage the drying rate and minimize defects such as checking and warping. After the steaming phase, the chamber may be vented, and the drying continues with the removal of moisture, often aided by controlled airflow and dehumidification. Höyrykammiokuivauksen is particularly effective for drying hardwoods and thicker lumber sections. The process can be energy-intensive but is valued for the quality of the dried wood it produces. The specific parameters of temperature, pressure, and duration are adjusted based on the wood species, thickness, and desired final moisture content.
