Házteteje

Házteteje is a term originating from Hungarian folklore and mythology, often translated as "house spirit" or "domestic guardian." It refers to a benevolent entity believed to reside within a household, responsible for the well-being and prosperity of its inhabitants. These spirits are typically depicted as invisible or taking on the form of small creatures, such as mice, cats, or even shadowy figures.

The presence of a házteteje was thought to be crucial for a harmonious home. They would ward off evil spirits, protect against illness and misfortune, and ensure good harvests for farming families. In return for their protection, families would leave offerings for the házteteje, typically in the form of food or drink, often placed in a designated corner of the house or near the hearth. Neglecting or disrespecting the házteteje could lead to bad luck, domestic discord, or even the spirit abandoning the home.

Belief in házteteje varied across different regions of Hungary, with specific traditions and names sometimes differing. While the concept is rooted in ancient animistic beliefs, it persisted in folk tales and superstitions for centuries.
