Görümce

Görümce is a Turkish term for the sister of one's spouse. It denotes the sister of a husband or wife and defines a specific in-law relationship within Turkish kinship vocabulary. For example, if you are married to a man, his sister is your görümce; if you are married to a woman, her sister is your görümce. The term is widely used in daily speech, family conversations, and literature to refer to that relative without naming the person.

The concept is part of a broader system of Turkish kinship terms that distinguish blood relatives from in-laws. The word itself is neutral, but the social expectations surrounding in-law relationships—such as forms of address, visitation, and involvement in family matters—can vary by region and family tradition.

In Turkish, other in-law terms include kayınvalide (mother-in-law) and kayınpeder (father-in-law), as well as terms for other relations through marriage such as gelin (daughter-in-law) and damat (son-in-law).
