Gyurcsány

Gyurcsány is a Hungarian surname. The most internationally recognized bearer is Ferenc Gyurcsány (born 1961), a Hungarian politician who served as prime minister of Hungary from 2004 to 2009, leading a Socialist Party–led government formed after the 2004 parliamentary elections.

During his tenure, his government faced economic and political pressures. The 2006 “Őszöd speech” controversy, in which he was heard criticizing political opponents and questioning the truthfulness of government communications, sparked large protests and damaged public trust. The global financial crisis of 2008–2009 further strained public finances and contributed to a decline in support for his administration. He resigned in 2009, and Gordon Bajnai formed a new government.

After leaving office, Gyurcsány remained a prominent figure on the Hungarian left. In 2011 he co-founded the Democratic Coalition (DK), a liberal, pro-European party, and has been a leading voice in opposition to the governing parties. DK has sought to rebuild support for a reform-oriented, democratic platform in Hungary and has participated in multiple elections.
