Gróðurhúsáhrifum

Gróðurhúsáhrifum is the Icelandic term for the greenhouse effect. It refers to the process by which certain gases in the Earth's atmosphere trap heat, warming the planet. These gases, known as greenhouse gases, include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor. They act like the glass roof of a greenhouse, allowing sunlight to pass through but preventing some of the outgoing infrared radiation from escaping back into space.

This natural phenomenon is essential for life on Earth, as it keeps the planet warm enough to sustain liquid water and a habitable climate. Without the natural greenhouse effect, Earth's average temperature would be significantly colder, likely below freezing.
