Grekerne

Grekerne is the term used in Norwegian and Danish to refer to the Greek people, an ethnolinguistic group associated with the Hellenic world. The core population resides in Greece, and Greek-speaking communities form a widespread diaspora across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. The Greek language, with roots dating back to ancient times, unites these communities despite regional dialects and historical shifts in language policy.

Historically, the Greeks trace their cultural continuity to ancient Greece, through the Hellenistic and Roman periods, the Byzantine Empire, and Ottoman rule. Following a nineteenth-century independence movement, the modern Greek state emerged in the 1830s. The term Grekerne thus encompasses both ancient heritage and modern national identity.

Language is central to Greek identity. Modern Greek is the primary language in Greece and schools, using the Greek alphabet. Dialects and historical forms, such as Demotic Greek and the now less-used Katharevousa, reflect regional variation and language reforms over time.
