Grabfeld

Grabfeld is a municipality in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, in Thuringia, Germany. It is located in the south of the state, on the border with Bavaria. The municipality was formed in 1996 by the merger of several smaller communities. The administrative seat is in the town of Meiningen, though the name Grabfeld refers to the historic landscape.

The Grabfeld region is a fertile agricultural area characterized by rolling hills and plains. Historically, it was an important settlement area during the Carolingian era, with numerous archaeological finds from that period. The name "Grabfeld" itself is believed to derive from the numerous burial mounds or "Gräber" found in the area.
