Current theories posit that under specific conditions of pressure, temperature, and nutrient availability, these colonies could experience a sudden, explosive release of accumulated biomass.

The proposed mechanism for a Grüburst involves a rapid increase in internal pressure within a confined subterranean space. This pressure could be generated by a sudden proliferation of microbial life, the accumulation of metabolic byproducts, or a geologically triggered event. When the pressure exceeds the structural integrity of the surrounding rock or ice, a violent eruption would ensue, ejecting a significant volume of microbial cells, cellular debris, and potentially complex organic molecules into the atmosphere or onto the surface.
