Gqcoupled refers to a class of cell surface receptors, known as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which specifically activate the Gq class of heterotrimeric G proteins upon ligand binding. These receptors play a vital role in transmitting extracellular signals into cellular responses, influencing various physiological processes.

Gq-coupled receptors are characterized by their seven transmembrane domains and their ability to interact with and activate Gq proteins, which are part of the larger G protein family. Activation of Gq proteins leads to the stimulation of phospholipase C-beta (PLC-β), an enzyme that hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) into two secondary messengers: inositol triphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG). IP3 induces calcium release from intracellular stores, while DAG activates protein kinase C (PKC), triggering downstream signaling pathways.

These signaling pathways regulate various physiological functions, including cardiovascular regulation, neurotransmission, immune responses, and metabolic processes. Gq-coupled receptors include many important receptor types such as muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (notably M1, M3, and M5), certain adrenergic receptors, and vasopressin V1 receptors.

Given their central role in cell communication, Gq-coupled receptors are prominent targets for pharmacological drugs used to treat a range of conditions including hypertension, depression, and gastrointestinal disorders. Understanding their mechanisms offers insights into cellular signaling and potential therapeutic strategies.
