The term "Goldilocks" comes from the fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," where Goldilocks finds porridge that is "just right" – not too hot and not too cold. Similarly, a planet in the Goldilocks Zone is not too close to its star, which would cause its water to boil away, nor too far away, where its water would freeze.

The exact distance for a star's Goldilocks Zone depends on several factors, primarily the star's size and temperature. More luminous and hotter stars have their Goldilocks Zones located further away, while cooler and dimmer stars have them closer in. The size and mass of the planet itself also play a role in its ability to retain an atmosphere and maintain surface temperatures conducive to liquid water.

While the Goldilocks Zone is a useful starting point for identifying potentially habitable exoplanets, it is not the sole determinant of habitability. Other factors such as the planet's atmospheric composition, geological activity, and the presence of a magnetic field are also considered important.
