Glükózanyagcsere refers to the set of biochemical processes in living organisms that involve the breakdown and synthesis of glucose. Glucose, a simple sugar, is the primary source of energy for most cells. The metabolism of glucose is crucial for maintaining cellular functions and overall organismal health.

The central pathway in glucose metabolism is glycolysis, which breaks down glucose into pyruvate, generating a small amount of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the cell's energy currency. Pyruvate can then enter different metabolic routes depending on the availability of oxygen. In aerobic conditions, pyruvate is converted to acetyl-CoA, which enters the citric acid cycle, producing more ATP and electron carriers. In anaerobic conditions, pyruvate is converted to lactate or ethanol, a process known as fermentation.

Gluconeogenesis is the synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors, such as lactate, amino acids, and glycerol. This process is vital for maintaining blood glucose levels during fasting or periods of low carbohydrate intake. Glycogenesis is the synthesis of glycogen, a storage form of glucose, primarily in the liver and muscles. Glycogenolysis is the breakdown of glycogen back into glucose when energy is required.

Hormones like insulin and glucagon play critical roles in regulating glucose metabolism. Insulin promotes glucose uptake by cells and its storage as glycogen, thus lowering blood glucose levels. Glucagon has the opposite effect, stimulating the breakdown of glycogen and gluconeogenesis to raise blood glucose levels. Disruptions in glucose metabolism can lead to various metabolic disorders, most notably diabetes mellitus, characterized by hyperglycemia.
