Glykosyyliryhmä, also known as a glycosyl group, is a functional group derived from a monosaccharide, such as glucose or galactose, after the removal of a hydroxyl group from the anomeric carbon. This group is characterized by the presence of a hemiacetal or acetal linkage. Glycosyl groups play a crucial role in the formation of carbohydrates, particularly in disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides, through glycosidic bonds. These bonds form when the anomeric carbon of one monosaccharide reacts with a hydroxyl group on another sugar molecule or a non-carbohydrate moiety.

The formation of a glycosidic bond involves the elimination of a water molecule and is typically catalyzed by enzymes called glycosyltransferases. The nature of the glycosyl group and the specific hydroxyl group involved in the linkage determine the properties of the resulting carbohydrate. For instance, the alpha and beta anomers of a monosaccharide lead to different stereochemical configurations at the anomeric carbon, resulting in alpha-glycosidic and beta-glycosidic bonds, respectively. These differences can significantly impact the structural integrity and biological function of complex carbohydrates.
