Glycerolphosphate

Glycerolphosphate, also known as glycerophosphate, is a derivative of glycerol where one of the hydroxyl groups is esterified with phosphoric acid. It exists as a stereoisomeric mixture of sn-glycerol-3-phosphate and sn-glycerol-1-phosphate, with sn-glycerol-3-phosphate being the more biologically significant form. Glycerolphosphate is a crucial metabolic intermediate found in all living organisms.

In cellular metabolism, glycerolphosphate plays a central role in both carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. It is a key component in the synthesis of phospholipids, which are essential building blocks of cell membranes.
