Glycerol3fosát

Glycerol3fosát, also known as glycerophosphate, is a phosphorylated derivative of glycerol. It is an important intermediate in both the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. Glycerol3fosát plays a crucial role in the synthesis of triglycerides, phospholipids, and ether lipids. It is formed from glycerol or dihydroxyacetone phosphate.

In the context of lipid metabolism, glycerol3fosát serves as the backbone for triglyceride synthesis. Glycerol3fosát is esterified with two fatty acids to form a diacylglycerol, which is then further esterified with a third fatty acid to yield a triglyceride. Similarly, in phospholipid synthesis, glycerol3fosát is acylated and then further modified with a phosphate head group to form various phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes.

Glycerol3fosát can also be generated from the breakdown of triglycerides through lipolysis. Furthermore, it is involved in gluconeogenesis, the process of synthesizing glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors, where it can be converted back to glycerol or enter the glycolytic pathway. The interconversion between glycerol3fosát and dihydroxyacetone phosphate is catalyzed by the enzyme glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. This enzyme utilizes NAD+ as a cofactor, producing NADH.
