Gleichgesinnung

Gleichgesinnung is a German noun meaning the quality or state of being like-minded, that is, sharing similar beliefs, values, or aims with others. The word combines gleich (the same) and Gesinnung (mentality or disposition). It describes both the presence of similar views among people and the act of seeking or forming such alignment.

In everyday language, Gleichgesinnung is used to refer to groups of people who share a common interest or worldview, such as friends, clubs, professional networks, or political movements. Gleichgesinnte are the individuals who belong to these circles and coordinate their actions or support one another’s objectives.

In political and organizational contexts, Gleichgesinnung signals trust and cooperation built on shared principles. It can facilitate collaboration and effective collective action, but it can also contribute to insularity or echo chambers if dissenting perspectives are excluded or discouraged. Critics warn that excessive Gleichgesinnung may reduce critical scrutiny of beliefs and hinder pluralism.

In the 20th century, discussions around alignment of worldview have figured prominently in political rhetoric, including contexts that emphasize coordinated action. Today the term remains common in ordinary speech, with related notions such as Gleichgesinnte (like-minded people) and, in historical analysis, Gleichschaltung as a related but distinct concept of institutional coordination during authoritarian regimes.
