Gleichform

Gleichform is a term used in German-language mathematics and related disciplines to denote a relation of form-equivalence between mathematical objects. The literal translation is “same form.” In this sense, two expressions, equations, or forms are called Gleichform if one can be transformed into the other by a reversible change of variables or scaling, so that they represent the same underlying object or structure.

In the area of quadratic forms, for instance, two binary quadratic forms ax^2 + bxy + cy^2 and a' x^2 + b' xy + c' y^2 are Gleichformen if there exists an invertible linear substitution x = pX + qY, y = rX + sY with determinant not zero, that maps one form to the other. This concept leads to a classification of forms up to the action of the appropriate matrix group, typically GL2(Z) or SL2(Z). Invariants such as discriminant and rank are preserved by Gleichformen and are used to distinguish non-equivalent forms.

Outside quadratic forms, Gleichformen can describe the equivalence of more general algebraic forms or equations under coordinate changes. The term is used primarily in historical or theoretical discussions; in modern English-language texts the concept is usually referred to as form equivalence or equivalence of forms.
