Glaciärsjöar, also known as glacial lakes, are bodies of water formed by the action of glaciers. They can originate in several ways. Proglacial lakes form at the edge of a melting glacier, often dammed by moraines, which are ridges of rock and sediment deposited by the ice. Supraglacial lakes form on the surface of a glacier, typically in depressions or crevasses. Subglacial lakes exist beneath the ice sheet, often under immense pressure, and are insulated from surface temperatures.
