Gjødselstilførsel refers to the process of adding nutrients to soil to support plant growth. This is a crucial practice in agriculture, horticulture, and even home gardening to ensure crops and plants receive the essential elements they need for optimal development. The primary nutrients plants require in large quantities are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, often referred to as NPK. Other essential nutrients include calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and various micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese.

There are two main categories of fertilizers: organic and inorganic. Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources such as animal manure, compost, and plant residues. They improve soil structure and fertility over time while releasing nutrients slowly. Inorganic fertilizers, also known as synthetic fertilizers, are manufactured chemically and provide nutrients in a readily available form for plants. These are often formulated to provide specific nutrient ratios tailored to the needs of particular crops or soil conditions.

The timing and method of fertilizer application are critical to maximize effectiveness and minimize environmental impact. Applying fertilizer at the right stage of plant growth ensures nutrients are absorbed when they are most needed. Methods of application include broadcasting, side-dressing, fertigation (applying fertilizer through irrigation systems), and foliar application (spraying nutrients directly onto leaves). Over-application of fertilizers can lead to nutrient imbalances, soil degradation, and water pollution through runoff, highlighting the importance of responsible and precise gjødselstilførsel.
