It is classified as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), the highest classification for Italian wines, indicating a rigorous production process and quality standards. The primary grape used for Ghemme is Nebbiolo, known locally as Spanna, which must constitute at least 85% of the blend.
