Getariako

Getariako is a small municipality located in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, Spain. Situated in the northern part of the province, it is part of the traditional territory of Goierri and lies along the banks of the Deba River. The town is known for its picturesque setting, characterized by lush green landscapes, traditional Basque architecture, and a rich cultural heritage.

The origins of Getariako date back to ancient times, with evidence of human settlement in the area dating to the Iron Age. The town played a significant role in the history of the Basque Country, particularly during the Age of Exploration. Getariako is famously associated with the explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, who was born in the nearby village of Getaria (now part of the municipality of Getaria). Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth after the death of Ferdinand Magellan, a feat that solidified the town’s place in maritime history.

Getariako is also renowned for its traditional fishing industry, which has been a cornerstone of the local economy for centuries. The town’s fishing port, known as *Puerto de Getaria*, remains active and contributes to the region’s maritime culture.
