Gerðrs

Gerðrs is a figure from Norse mythology, primarily appearing in the Poetic Edda, specifically in the poem *Skírnismál*. She is described as a beautiful jötunn, a giantess, and the daughter of the jötunn Gymir and his wife Aurboda. Gerðr is renowned for her exceptional beauty, which captures the attention of the god Freyr.

The narrative in *Skírnismál* details Freyr's longing for Gerðr. He is struck by her beauty from his high seat, Hliðskjálf, and falls deeply in love. Freyr dispatches his loyal servant, Skírnir, to Gymir's hall to woo Gerðr on his behalf. Skírnir's mission is arduous, as Gerðr initially refuses Freyr's advances, despite the gifts and promises of wealth offered. She is defiant and resistant to becoming Freyr's wife.

In his desperation, Skírnir resorts to threats. He brandishes a magical sword and pronounces curses upon Gerðr, threatening her with eternal loneliness and misfortune if she does not yield. Faced with these dire imprecations, Gerðr eventually relents and agrees to meet Freyr in the grove of Barri nine nights later, where she will become his bride. The union of Freyr and Gerðr is significant, symbolizing the connection between the Vanir gods and the giants, and Freyr's sacrifice of his sword for her hand is often noted.
