Gelaad

Gelaad is a fictional city-state in the fantasy setting of Ardentia. It sits on the delta of the Lyris River along the western coast, benefiting from a sheltered harbor and a network of inland canals.

The city centers on the harbor district, with surrounding neighborhoods linked by waterways. The metropolitan area is home to about 360,000 residents, drawn from coastal guilds, merchants, and artisans.

Gelaad operates as a constitutional republic. The Council of Seventeen legislates, while an elected Prefect serves as head of government. The judiciary is independent, with the High Court based in the Council Spire.

Founded in the 9th century by fisher-traders, Gelaad grew into a maritime trading power and participated in regional coalitions before attaining de facto independence after the Great Revolt in the late medieval era.

The port handles bulk cargo, spices, and textiles. Shipbuilding, navigation services, banking, and tourism are central economic sectors. The Lantern Market district is a major commercial hub.

The Gelaadian dialect blends coastal pidgin with scholarly registers. Annual festivals include Harvest Tide and Night Lanterns. Educational institutions include the Maritime University and the Royal Academy of Arts.
