Gegenstrang
Gegenstrang is the German term for the lagging strand in DNA replication. It refers to the strand that is synthesized discontinuously in short segments, in contrast to the Leitstrang (leading strand), which is synthesized continuously. The Gegenstrang serves as the template for synthesis in the 5' to 3' direction away from the replication fork, while the Leitstrang is replicated toward the fork.
Because the two DNA strands are antiparallel, the Gegenstrang cannot be copied in a single, continuous run.
In bacteria, DNA polymerase III mainly carries out fragment synthesis, while DNA polymerase I removes primers
The concept of Gegenstrang highlights the antiparallel structure of DNA and the division of labor in replication
