Geenitoimintaan, often translated as gene activity or gene expression, refers to the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. This product is typically a protein, but can also be a functional RNA molecule, such as ribosomal RNA or transfer RNA. The regulation of gene activity is a fundamental aspect of biology, crucial for cellular differentiation, development, and response to environmental stimuli.

The process begins with transcription, where a specific segment of DNA, a gene, is copied into a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. This mRNA then travels to the ribosome, the cell's protein-making machinery. At the ribosome, the sequence of nucleotides in the mRNA is translated into a sequence of amino acids, forming a polypeptide chain. This chain then folds into a functional protein.

Gene activity is tightly controlled. Cells do not express all their genes all the time. Instead, they activate or deactivate specific genes as needed. This regulation can occur at various stages, including during transcription (controlling whether or not a gene is copied into mRNA), during RNA processing (modifying the mRNA before it leaves the nucleus), or during translation (controlling how much protein is made from the mRNA). This intricate control ensures that cells can perform their specialized functions and maintain homeostasis.
