Geenisäätely, also known as gene regulation, is the complex process by which cells control which genes are expressed, or turned on, and to what extent. This control is fundamental to all life, allowing organisms to respond to their environment, develop from a single cell into a complex organism, and maintain cellular functions. Gene regulation ensures that the right proteins are produced at the right time and in the right amounts.

The process of gene regulation occurs at various levels, from the accessibility of DNA to the modification of proteins. In eukaryotes, gene regulation can begin with chromatin remodeling, where the DNA-protein complex is altered to make genes more or less accessible for transcription. Transcription factors, proteins that bind to specific DNA sequences, play a crucial role in initiating or blocking gene transcription. After transcription, messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules can be further regulated through processing events like splicing, capping, and polyadenylation. The stability and translation of mRNA into protein are also tightly controlled. Finally, even after proteins are synthesized, their activity can be modified through post-translational modifications.

Disruptions in gene regulation can lead to various diseases, including cancer, developmental disorders, and metabolic conditions. Understanding gene regulation is therefore vital for developing therapeutic strategies and advancing our knowledge of biology.
