Gecarcinid
Gecarcinids are a family of true crabs known as land crabs, belonging to the family Gecarcinidae. These crabs are adapted to terrestrial life but must return to water to breed. They are characterized by their robust bodies and strong claws, with most species displaying vibrant colors such as red, orange, or purple. These crabs are found in tropical and subtropical regions across the world, particularly in coastal areas, mangroves, and rainforests. The Christmas Island red crab is perhaps the most well-known species, famous for its massive annual migration to the ocean to spawn. Gecarcinids are omnivorous scavengers, feeding on leaf litter, fruits, and other organic matter. They play important ecological roles as both decomposers and prey for various animals. Their burrowing activity helps aerate soil and distribute nutrients. Despite their adaptability, some gecarcinid species face threats from habitat loss and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway in certain regions to protect these ecologically significant crustaceans and their migratory patterns.
