Ganzschritte

Ganzschritte is a term used in certain fields, particularly in music theory and analysis, to refer to a whole tone step or a major second interval. This interval spans two semitones. In Western music, the chromatic scale is divided into twelve semitones, and a ganzschritt covers two of these. For example, the interval from C to D is a ganzschritt.

The concept of the ganzschritt is fundamental to understanding scales and chords. For instance, the whole tone scale is constructed entirely from ganzschritte, creating a unique, often ethereal or dreamlike sound due to the absence of the more common minor or major thirds.
