Gaditan

Gaditan is a demonym for a native or resident of Cádiz, a city and port in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. The term is largely historical or scholarly; in contemporary English usage it is uncommon. The modern Spanish forms gaditano (masc.) and gaditana (fem.) are standard for residents.

Etymology and historical usage: The name derives from the ancient Phoenician settlement of Gadir, later known to the Romans as Gades. The Latin ethnonym Gaditanus referred to inhabitants of Gades, and the English form Gaditan arises from this heritage. It appears in older texts but is rarely used today.

Context: Cádiz lies on a sandy peninsula on the Atlantic coast, connected to the mainland by the Isthmus of Cádiz. It is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, with a history dating back to Phoenician times. The Gaditan label thus evokes a historical link to Cádiz’s maritime and cultural history, spanning Phoenician, Roman, and modern periods.
