GRACEFOmissies
GRACEFOmissies is a Dutch-language label used to refer to the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission and its associated observational activities. The GRACE-FO mission is a joint mission of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) that continues the time-variable mapping of Earth's gravity field initiated by the original GRACE mission. Launched on May 22, 2018, GRACE-FO comprises two identical satellites in near-polar, low-Earth orbit separated by roughly 220 kilometers. The primary measurement is precise tracking of the distance between the satellites using microwave ranging, supplemented by a Laser Ranging Interferometer (LRI) to reduce measurement drift and improve accuracy. From the minute variations in orbit separation and gravity-induced accelerations, GRACE-FO derives monthly gravity field maps and mass-change estimates.
